The silence as they spiraled down the tunnels into the earth was similar to that hallway leading to the dean’s office.

“How can you be so sure you won’t need my magic, Mika?”

“You’re my heir, Audrey. I can’t lose you. If I die, you become the matriarch of the Marshall clan. So I’ve ensured I won’t need a drop of your power.” Which meant Mika could put Audrey as far from her as possible without keeping her at home.

“Well, I can’t lose you.” Audrey snapped, pulling Mika to a stop.

Four witchlights bounced against two massive wooden doors then, trying to find a way in.

They’d made it to the seal.

Mika didn’t know what to say, so she studied the iron handles and the various locks underneath the giant padlock instead. Her bonded were just as bad, standing there awkwardly as Audrey fumed.

“I’m going to fight with you.” Audrey yanked on Mika’s hand, forcing her to look into those hazel eyes that were burning with righteous fire. “There’s nothing you can do to stop me. If you try to chain me up here, I’ll never forgive you.”

Mika would never be able to forgive herself if she stole away her sister’s choices like Claire had tried to do to her.

She studied their clasped hands. The other witch didn’t shy away from her banshee nails or the knowledge that Mika could drain her dry with a single touch. Audrey never had.

“I would never do that,” Mika reassured. “But I don’t have a divine weapon to give you, so I refuse to put you by my side. You’ll be with Selene.”

Malachi cleared his throat and shifted his weight from foot to foot. “I could give her Excalibur. There are plenty of demon blades to go around.”

Audrey heaved a massive sigh then like she knew she’d been beaten. “I have my own demon blades. I’ll stay with Selene, but if you die Mika Marshall, I’ll force Lucifer to let me live in hell with you.”

Lucien chuckled and leaned down to kiss Audrey’s cheek. “We all will. The devil could do with some excitement after so many centuries, don’t you think?”

“If any of you mention dying again, I will personally bring you hell on earth since you seem to like it so much,” Ethan snapped, waving Mika forward.

“So bossy,” Malachi teased.

The mood was lighter though and she felt like the last pieces were clicking into place when she sliced her banshee nail across her palm. Mika pressed her hands together to cover her skin with blood before she grabbed those iron handles and pulled.

The doors were made from hickory – a wood known for its strength and flexibility. It was different than the poplar wood used in the swirls and patterns. And she didn’t miss the added geometry in those designs.

Only her blood could be used to open the doors to the seal, but it was Malachi who went through first– his blue flame ready in both hands. Lucien and Corbin followed close behind.
